As a socialist, I believe the police are our class enemies. They exist merely to protect the private property of capitalists, to crush labor and civil rights movements, and to violently enforce our country’s racial hierarchy. Beginning as southern “slave patrols” early in American history, policing as an institution has always been inherently white supremacist. I believe the horrific nature of American policing is a fact for which evidence is provided on a daily basis — not only by the killing of George Floyd and so many others, but by what you describe in this story.
